Experienced Representation for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

If you suffer from RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) that was caused by the negligence of another, and your insurance company refuses to pay for treatment, contact the South Florida law firm of Michael J. Meksraitis Chartered, Attorney at Law. Our attorney is extensively familiar with RSD cases that are caused by the negligence of others, and has helped many victims of accident or injury obtain compensation.  (Please note that personal injury attorney, Michael Meksraitis, does not handle workers' compensation cases.  See information on the types of RSD cases  the firm handles.)

Based in Tampa, Florida, we represent clients throughout the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties of Central and South Florida. We know that RSD sufferers meet many obstacles — first in getting an accurate diagnosis, and then in obtaining approval for medical care or compensation for damages. We can help.

Michael Meksraitis has practiced personal injury law for 36 years in Florida, and has earned a reputation for effective legal representation in cases of RSD, also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy — A Misunderstood Disability

Many clients have seen several doctors before receiving a correct diagnosis of RSD. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is typified by severe pain out of proportion to the original injury, and/or chronic, debilitating pain that continues long after the injury occurs. The pain may migrate to other parts of the body, including the opposite limb or even the eyes. Patients often experience a drop in temperature in the effected limb, or develop sensitivity to cold or touch in that area.

RSD is common in crush injuries (foot run over by a car) and pressure injuries (an orthopedic cast wrapped too tight), or accidents such as gunshot wounds or even falling off a bike. The nerve is damaged, but not severed, and the nerve tissue does not heal normally. The constant, burning pain takes a devastating toll — because the limb is painful to move or use normally, the muscles begins to atrophy, sometimes crippling the appendage similar to arthritis.

Treatment of RSD

RSD typically follows three stages over several weeks: chronic pain, loss of use, and then loss of muscle tone (dystrophy). In the later stages, the damage may not be reversible. Treatments include:

  • Physical therapy to regain use
  • Amputation (in severe cases)
  • Sympathetic block — doctors block the sympathetic nervous system that transmits signals to and from the brain
  • Putting the patient to sleep for prolonged periods and "rebooting" their nervous system

Our law firm has represented many clients in a Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy lawsuit to recover damages from the negligent party that caused the original accident. We work closely with the client's doctors to demonstrate the extent of the disability in seeking damages for:

  • Medical expenses incurred and future treatment
  • Lost wages and lost earnings if the person cannot return to work
  • Pain and suffering

We aggressively fight insurance companies that dispute the diagnosis or refuse to pay for necessary treatment. If you have been turned away by other lawyers, or your pains are downplayed by an insurance carrier, contact Tampa, Florida RSD attorney Michael J. Meksraitis about a Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy lawsuit to cover your losses and get the treatment you need.
